The
"San Vicente de Paul" Shelter is a civil association from San Luis
Potosí, that belongs to the Fondo Potosino network, dedicated to caring
for elderly women in day care and 24-hour stay.
In the city
of San Luis Potosí in1987, the San Vicente de Paúl residence opened its doors
in the state. Those unfamiliar with it might think it's just another nursing
home for adults in the final stage of their life.
What a
mistaken idea!: this home cares for elderly women in a family-like and devoted
environment.
"There
are complicated situations where families cannot care for them as they should,
and it's risky to leave them alone at home. Here, we are an extension of their
home," states Sergio Jacobo Mendoza, administrative director of the
residence.
Currently,
elderly women are part of this community, where they find comprehensive care
provided by the congregation of the Discalced Carmelites. In an atmosphere of
love, respect, and patience, women over 65 years old reside in this house.
Some of the
services offered include physical rehabilitation, specialized nutrition,
psychological therapy, recreational workshops such as singing, dancing, and
crafts, as well as integration outings.
"Dignity
is the value we work with most. The idea is for them to enjoy their stay, be
happy, and leave behind their past or the complicated parts of their
lives," emphasizes Mendoza.
Some of the
families that request the residence's support provide a recovery fee; however,
not all have the same resources. The main needs are specialized geriatric care,
personal hygiene items, medications, diapers, as well as volunteers in the
areas of psychology, physiotherapy, or for spending time with the
beneficiaries.
